Overview

Optical Science and Engineering Research Center in Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) (http://oserc.physics.sjtu.edu.cn) is the main body of Optics Discipline of Physics Department in SJTU. It is also one of the earliest units who are engaged in research on laser and optic-electronic technology.

Currently, the research areas in the center include: quantum information and quantum optics, advanced photonic material and physics, novel photo-electronic material, waveguide photo-electronics and integrated optics, fiber laser physics and technology, optical information storage, new optical testing methods and instrument technology.

At present, there are 20 faculties in the center, including 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Science, 2 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 7 professors, 3 special fellows, 1 awardee of Youth Thousand Talent Project and 1 Shanghai Outstanding academic leader. In the past five years, the center has taken over 60 all kinds of projects from State and province cooperation, and the scientific research funds have approached 60 million. Over 30 patents were authorized. In the recent five years the center has published near 300 papers, among which 220 papers are indexed by Science Citation Index Database, including many high-level papers published in Nature Physics, Physical Review Letters, Advanced Materials and Small.

History

As early as 1965, it carried out the research on laser physics and technology, established China's first underwater laser television image device and won the Significant Scientific Research Achievement Award in the National Conference on Science and Technology. In 1981, optics discipline was authorized to award master degree, and then was approved to award doctoral degree in 1986. In 1997, optics discipline became one of the test areas of the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Optical Communication Systems and Networks. In the past thirty years, the Physics Department of SJTU has cultivated many outstanding optical talents, who are active in international academia and industry, including ShiYao Zhu, Jun Ye, Min Gu and a large number of leading talents who are active in optical information and photovoltaic industry.

From the mid-1990s, optics discipline carried out researches on optoelectronics, photovoltaic science and molecular photonics while introducing the talents. According to the idea of polytechnic combination, it extended from the optical basic research to the combination of the optical basic research and applied optical basic research. Through about a decade’s construction, it has established important position in the whole country and Shanghai. Since 2000, optics discipline has earned a lot of support from the National 985 and 211 projects, and made considerable progress. Scientific research level and paper quality have been greatly improved, which laid the solid foundation for the rapid development of optics discipline. In 2007 and 2012, the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Optical Communication Systems and Networks, undertaken by some of the optics discipline directions, passed the assessment by the Ministry of Science and Technology; it originally launched several basic researches on the optoelectronic devices that support optical communication system. In April 2007, the optics discipline in SJTU received international assessment on the past research achievements, academic leaders and future development plan, by the expert panel led by the world-famous scientist, Professor Yuanrang Shen from University of California Berkeley. They affirmed the development in the information technology promoted by the polytechnic combination and gave high evaluation on the current research achievements; meanwhile, they offered many good suggestions on the talent introduction and discipline setting. According to the suggestions from the international assessment, we determined that researches in optics discipline must face the basic frontiers in optical physic and the major needs from the country and society. In 2007, optics discipline was assessed as the State Key Discipline and Shanghai Key Discipline. A large number of outstanding academic leaders and young scholars were introduced since 2008.

To accelerate the overall and coordinated development of the optics and optical engineering discipline, Optical Science and Engineering Research Center in Shanghai Jiao Tong University was formally founded in 2010. Professor Xianfeng Chen was elected as the director. The target of the research center is to introduce and cultivate distinguished leading talents, facing the basic frontiers in optical physic and the major needs from the country and society, and become the world-class research institute on optical science and engineering.
